Overview

Academic Background

I graduated in Computer Science at the at the Politechnics School at the University of Girona in 2007. I received the VIBOT master degree (European Master in Vision and Robotics) in 2009. The VIBOT master is a collaboration between the Université de Bourgogne (Le Creusot, France), the Universitat de Girona (Girona, Spain) and Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland). I am now doing a PhD in Information Technology based on Breast Cancer research (Image Analysis Lab) at the Computer Vision and Robotics Group at the University of Girona. My supervisors are Dr. Joan Martí and Dr. Arnau Oliver.

Research interest

Nowadays, medical imaging plays a fundamental role to achieve a right diagnostic on many diseases. However, it involves deep changes concerning the management, storing and retrieving of digital images. Thus, in order to improve the current informatics systems, it is necessary to develop architectures and systems databases, as well as communication and PACS systems. Although there exists some public mammographic databases, none of them has been digitally purchased and the images come from analogical acquisition and subsequent digitization of the films. For breast imaging, this process involves an inherent loss of quality, depending on the digitizer system, loss of information acquisition and nonstandardization of image formats.

Besides, systems based on web applications are particulary interesting due to recent advances in computer technology and in communications systems and protocols, which have allowed the development of online software and data recovery in a reliable and inexpensive way. Therefore, the use of Web Services applied to medical domain has known an important growth during the last years, and has become a communication system in itself. Moreover, the introduction of file format XML (eXtended Markup Language) allows to exchange information in regardless of the platform, thus introducing a standard format to include diagnosis on the images.

The purpose of our work is to provide a useful tool to the medical and scientific communities in order to manage a mammographic database image including their associated diagnoses, featuring the advantages and functionalities of a web service (i.e. authentication, security, data retrieval).

Use a diagnostic tools and computer-aided system in mammography in improving the radiological assessment of digital mammograms

The main objective is to enhance e-CADMC explores the methods and protocols for the first detection of breast cancer by improving digital mammograms. In fact, a new CAD tool will be designed, developed and will be tested along with a new technique for acquiring images of mammography with dynamic contrast. Therefore, new techniques and protocols established by the first detection of breast cancer will be tested fully and hospitals involved in the project: CSPT Sabadell, Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, Hospital Josep Trueta and Hospital Santa Caterina de Girona.
